Talented musicians of ‘Trio Chicago’ visit HCT Madinat Zayed
Students at Madinat Zayed Higher Colleges of Technology were thrilled at the end of last week when Chicago came to Madinat Zayed with much harmony and razzmatazz.
A group of musicians called Trio Chicago and Friends came to play their special blend of classical and jazz music and to sing some of their favourite songs to an enthralled audience.
They were brought to the UAE through the Cultural Affairs Office of the US Embassy and they played music by American composers including George Gershwin (Porgy and Bess selections), Leonard Bernstein (the overture to the opera Candide) and ragtime composer Scott Joplin (The Maple Leaf Rag). The students were especially impressed with the powerful voice of the vocalist, with no microphone needed to hear her.
This traveling group came to Madinat Zayed by way of The American Corner, an initiative set up by the American Embassy that aims to present a broad spectrum of American culture to students in the colleges.
There is a collection of materials already in the Madinat Zayed library and there will be more performances, lectures and presentations over the coming year. Last year they presented three American poets, who read their work and shared their thoughts about being an artist, as well as liaising with staff and students on leadership programs, like the MEPI program.
HCT student Sara Al Hammadi from Madinat Zayed had the chance to visit the United States and take some leadership courses at a couple of American Universities, including Harvard, as well as meeting up with other students from the Middle East, thanks to this wonderful initiative.
