Bachelor of Science in Midwifery

The Health Sciences field is emerging as one of the UAE’s strategic and largest growth areas. The Higher Colleges of Technology’s Health Sciences Division offers a broad range of Health Sciences Bachelor, Higher Diploma and Diploma programs, all designed to provide graduates with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in this challenging and rewarding field.

The Faculty mission is to develop robust, pedagogically sound, nationally and internationally accredited curricula through collaboration internally and externally, partnering with industry and community, particularly in the medical and health sector, to deliver learning and teaching programs that are technically and clinically evidence-based and research informed, and to be highly innovative in the continuous improvement of each program, sensitive to the health and medical industry and community requirements, and emerging future workforce demands. Healthcare is one of the major pillars of the UAE National Innovation Strategy for the Health and Education sectors, and these sectors are undergoing considerable growth and reformation. There is a very high and increasing market demand for healthcare jobs across the sector, particularly for professionals skilled in the disciplines of Health (nursing and midwifery), Allied Health Professions (medical imaging science, emergency medical services, medical laboratory technology, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, health information management, health informatics and digital health, and social work), and related disciplines in the broad scope of “One Health” (veterinary science). The Faculty of health Sciences is vibrant and growing division which offers applied bachelor degrees, diplomas, and professional certification qualifications (including micro-credentials), which are designed to the address the needs of the UAE public and private industries and communities that we serve. These different qualifications are offered by 8 Programs in the areas of Emergency Medical Services, Health Information Management, Medical Imaging Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Veterinary Science. Indeed, our programs are designed to provide graduates with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in the many opportunities of this rewarding field. Throughout these programs student learning takes place in classrooms, laboratories, clinics, hospitals, government departments, human services organizations, educational and research institutions and a large range of private and semi-private health-related organizations. This work integrated learning experience provides the knowledge, skills, competencies, attitudes and behaviors expected of a modern health sciences professional.

Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program is a four-year program with 120 credit hours including General Study requirements. The program provides educational foundation to prepare qualified, professional, and research proficient graduates for entry into professional practice as a registered midwife. The program focuses on acquiring knowledge derived from the Competency Framework of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), the UAE Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Competency Framework and the UAE NMC Code of Conduct and Education Standards. The program is distinguished as it provides a mixture of basic health sciences, theoretical knowledge in midwifery, women’s social and behavioral sciences, as well as other areas including newborn care, therapeutic communication, ethical and legal aspects of midwifery practice, leadership knowledge and skills, research and biostatistics, and midwifery evidence-based practice. In addition, the program provides extensive supervised practical and clinical training in the Simulation Learning Center in the Campus and in specialized women’s and children healthcare facilities and hospitals.

Program Goals

  1. Prepare midwifery graduates who are committed to excellence in the practice of midwifery to improve the health of women, newborns, and families in various healthcare settings.
  2. Prepare midwifery graduates who function independently within an interdisciplinary teamwork to provide safe, ethical, equitable, respectful and accessible care of women, newborns, and families in various healthcare settings.
  3. Embrace the diversity and equity of educational framework of midwifery students to enhance knowledge acquisition, critical thinking, competency, excellence, innovation, creativity, collaboration, and professional development.
  4. Prepare the midwifery graduates to meet the national and international healthcare industry expectations for high quality of care and outcomes through certification, licensure, and other professional requirements.
  5. Prepare professional and research-proficient midwifery graduates to foster and improve the quality of care and promote the research and evidence-based practice of the midwifery profession.
  6. Prepare midwifery graduates for leadership and professional role development through continuous education, advancement in practice, technology utilization and scholarly activities.
  7. Prepare an effective multicultural midwifery workforce to meet the needs of the UAE population.

Program Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this program the graduate will be able to:

  1. Demonstrates competence, confidence and accountability while providing safe, therapeutic, effective, holistic, compassionate and culturally sensitive midwifery care to individuals, families, community and society.
  2. Demonstrates effective incorporation of knowledge about ethical, legal, and professional implications of the midwifery code of conduct and scope of practice to meet the organizational, national and international regulatory standards and when providing midwifery care.
  3. Demonstrates professionalism within the midwifery and the inter-disciplinary healthcare teams using the necessary inter and intra-professional communication and collaborative skills to build collaborative, trusting and compassionate relationships with individuals, families and other healthcare professionals.
  4. Applies critical thinking and analytical skills to reflect on care, contribute to quality improvement; generate technical and innovative solutions that improve and advance the quality of midwifery practice.
  5. Utilizes innovation, technological, entrepreneurship and leadership skills and attributes to collaboratively engage in relevant professional and multidisciplinary networking to promote midwifery practice and care in a variety of health care settings.
  6. Integrates evidence-based practice, research, clinical expertise, and patient values to meet the changing healthcare needs and promote patient, family and community healthcare outcomes through incorporating the midwifery research findings and the interdisciplinary knowledge exchange.
